What is Medicare Advantage?Medicare Advantage is a Health Insurance plan that is offered by private Insurance companies that is contracted through Medicare to provide seniors with Part A and Part B benefits. Most of the plans are usually HMOs or PPOs, but can also be a Private Fee-for-Service Plan, Special Needs Plan, or Medicare Medical Savings Account Plan.
You’re first eligible to sign up for Medicare 3 months before you turn 65. You may be eligible to get Medicare earlier if you have a disability, End-Stage Renal Disease (ESRD), or ALS (also called Lou Gehrig’s disease). Your first chance to sign up is called your Initial Enrollment Period. It lasts for 7 months, starting 3 months before you turn 65, and ending 3 months after the month you turn 65. Medicare Open Enrollment for coverage starts every year on October 15th and ends on December 7th. It’s the one time each year that all Medicare members can review their health insurance coverage, whether you’re new to the program or looking for other options for next year. What is Medicare Supplement Insurance?Medicare supplement (Medigap) insurance can help pay some of the health care costs that original Medicare does not cover, like copayments, coinsurance, and deductibles.
Some Medigap policies also offer coverage for services that Original Medicare doesn't cover, like medical care when you travel outside the U.S. If you have Original Medicare and you buy a Medigap policy, Medicare will pay its share of the Medicare-approved amount for covered health care costs. Then your Medicare supplement insurance policy pays its share. A Medigap policy is different from a Medicare Advantage Plan. Those plans are ways to get Medicare benefits, while a Medigap policy only supplements your Original Medicare benefits. Important Things to Know About Medicare Supplement Coverage
